The sibling duo Nik and Lijana Wallenda startled thousands of tense onlookers in New York's Times Square on Sunday as they walked on a wire strung 25 storeys above the ground. The brother-sister duo who have been hugely celebrated under the banner of their 'Flying Wallendas' stunt troupe walked on a 1,300-foot long wire, from opposite ends.
The performance that got the whole world talking after being broadcast live, saw the duo walk on the single stand from opposite sides, holding balancing poles. When they came in a position of convergence, Lijana sat on the wire strung between skyscrapers and her brother stepped over her, following which she stood back up again to finish the walk.
Nik shared the video of the same on Twitter and captioned it saying, "Conquering the impossible. #HighwireLIVE"
Here's the post:
The acrobat took around 36 minutes to complete and the audience was left with heart throbbing excitement.
This stunt of the famous circus family was particularly significant because it marked 42-year-old Lijana's return to the rope after the tragic incident of 2017. As per media reports, during a practice session of an eight-person pyramid on a wire back then she and four others fell more than 9 meters and the near-fatal incident left her seriously injured. Throughout the process of the walk, Nik kept encouraging her sister through a microphone.
Meanwhile, Nik Wallenda who has been in this business for years now rose to fame for being the first person to walk a tightrope across the Niagara Falls in 2012. He has done several other death-defying stunts including the blindfolded walk between two skyscrapers in Chicago, in 2014.
