It was around the same time last year that a girl named Priya Prakash Varrier achieved instant stardom just for a wink. The youngster’s expressions in a clip from the Malayalam movie ‘Oru Adaar Love’ went viral on social media, and today she is a well-known face not just in India, but across the globe. The film, which has gone from one language to four languages now, is gearing up for release a year later, and the actress shares that the popularity got her family so worried that they even put her under house arrest. Priya also reveals that there were film offers galore for her, including with Allu Arjun.

In a recent interview with a portal, Priya said the 'wink girl' tag definitely got her popularity and recognition, but she’s keen to ‘outgrow’ the tag someday. The actress added it was difficult to accept what was going on, but stated that she is trying to enjoy the phase.

She said that the overnight popularity was something both she and her family didn’t expect and were trying to handle it together as it was new. The 19-year-old revealed that she was not given a mobile phone, and that her parents were so worried that they kept her under house arrest and didn’t allow her to go outside the house.

The actress continued that the media persons would land up at her residence without informing, and she’d do interviews in her school uniform. Not just media, even locals would arrive asking it was indeed the actress' house, and if it’d be possible to meet her. Her father would make up excuses like she’s gone out or that she lives in a hostel.

On the loss of privacy following the row, Priya said that only at the start of the entire situation, there was a ‘curfew’ for her, but shared that she hasn’t given up on hanging out with her friends, something she enjoys even today.

Like every coin has two sides, the popularity of the actress' ‘wink’ brought controversies with it too. A First Information Report was registered against Priya as the song 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' from the movie allegedly ‘hurt religious sentiments’ for lyrics allegedly having a reference to Prophet Mohammad.

On the controversy, the teenager said she was not aware about anything related to it, but stated that the director and producers were tensed and even told her that they were withdrawing the song. She was saddened about it as it was the song that had brought her recognition, however, the Supreme Court quashed the FIR later on.

Naturally, Priya was flooded with offers from various industries. However, the actress shared that she couldn’t take it up as the work for ‘Oru Adaar Love’ was still pending, something she has been busy with the whole year. Priya revealed she missed the opportunity to be paired opposite Tollywood star Allu Arjun.  She denied reports of being offered ‘Simmba’ opposite Ranveer Singh.

Priya's second film, however, will be ‘Sridevi Bungalow’, that has also landed in a controversy for reportedly basing their plot around the death of legendary actress Sridevi. ‘Oru Adaar Love’, meanwhile, releases on 14 February.
