Game of Thrones will return for its eighth and final season in April 2019, the show's official Twitter handle has announced in a post.

The gap between seasons 7 and 8, incidentally the two shortest seasons with 7 and 6 episodes respectively, is the longest in the series thus far, with all previous seasons releasing with a gap of a year. The final two seasons, however, required a gap of two years. Filming for the grand climax of the TV adaptation of George R R Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' ended a couple of months ago, with the show's remaining stars generally taking to social media to issue nostalgia-filled goodbyes.
