Sohum Shah starrer Tumbbad, which hit the theatres again on Friday, September 13, opened at Rs 1.50 crore. Owing to the re-release, the movie is trending high on social media. Amid this, we have brought you an interesting anecdote regarding the movie. Do you know, that Sohum was not the first choice for the role of Vinayak Rao and the makers had shot a few scenes with Nawazuddin Siddiqui?

Nawazuddin Siddiqui was the first choice of Tumbbad

Writer Rahi Anil Barve, who also directed the movie, wrote its first draft in 1997, but it was only in 2008 that he wrote the whole script. He found the producer to back his film and roped in Nawazudddin as a lead. After shooting a few scenes of Tumbbad, the movie was shelved as the producer backed out at the last moment. Earlier in an interview, the director shared, "We started shooting without money in hand. We identified locations, got actors on board, requested the technicians to help, and promised everyone that we would pay soon. And then, the producer abandoned us. It was the year 2008."

For the next three years, he knocked on the doors of several producers for funding. Finally, in 2012, Sohum came on board as co-producer and a lead actor. Apart from him, Anurag Kashyap and Anand Gandhi also came on board as a producer.

The director shared the same on his X handle when the movie was set to release in 2018. He shared a photo of Nawaz as Vinayak Rao and wrote, "TUMBBAD 2008..WHEN NOWAZ WAS PLAYING VINAYAK..WE CAME BACK FROM SASWAD SHOOT 24 HOURS AFTER IT GOT STALLED FOR THE FIRST TIME..THAT NIGHT STILL HURTS LIKE HELL #tumbbad (sic)."

In the background, the voiceover plays, “Samay ka pahiya gol hai... jo beet gaya vo phir laut kai ayega. Yeh darwaza bhi ek baar phir khulega.” On hearing this, Pandurang asks if this door will open, then it means Hastar will also come. Vinayak replies by saying that a cataclysm will come.
