However, do you know who is Lord Parashurama and what was his role in Ramayana and Mahabharat? Take a look below to know all about this iconic figure of Hindu mythology.
Who is Lord Parashurama?
Also referred to as Rama Jamadagnya, Rama Bhargava and Virarama, the sixth avatar among the Dashavatara of the preserver god Vishnu in Hinduism. He is considered as a destroyer of the evil on this planet. In this avatar, Lord Vishnu was in the form of a human. He came to Earth to stop Chakravarti Samrat Karthaveerya Arjuna as he had turned evil due to his ego and non-humility.
It is believed that Parashurama was Chiranjeevi, meaning he was immortal. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Born as Ramabhadra of the Bhargava Clan (headed by Bhrigu, one of the Manvantaras of Lord Brahma), he later gained the name of Parashurama when he obtained Mahakaal's Parashu (axe weapon) and led the Devas to victory against the Asuras in a war in which the Devas were losing.
In Chapter 6 of the Devi Bhagavata Purana, he is born from the thigh with intense light surrounding him that blinds all warriors, who then repent their evil ways and promise to lead a moral life if their eyesight is restored. The boy grants them the boon.
He was a master of weapons especially the Parashu and the bow he wielded.
Lord Parashurama's role in Ramayana
In the epic Ramayana, lord Parashurama arrives after Sita Swayamvara upon hearing the loud noise when Lord Ram accidentally broke the divine bow Pinaka. However, he later acknowledged Lord Ram as an avatar of Lord Vishnu and asked him to destroy the fruits of his austerities.
Lord Parashurama's role in Mahabharat
According to several Hindu scriptures, he played a vital role in Mahabharata, teaching Bheeshma, Dronacharya and Karna the art of war and weaponry and fought against Bheeshma to fulfil Amba's request to kill Bheeshma, though he failed to do so.
What do we know about Mahavatar?
The movie is produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films, and the script of the movie is written by Niren Bhatt. It is all set to hit cinemas in Christmas 2026.
