Amid the surge of horror films worldwide, a peculiar addition to the genre emerges with Punch. Set against the backdrop of anthropological and supernatural terrors, this British slasher horror, helmed by director Andy Edwards of Midnight Peepshow fame, promises a distinct narrative, reinventing the classic puppets Punch and Judy in a spine-chilling setting. The star cast of the film includes Alina Allison, Macaulay Cooper, and Faye Campbell as Frankie, Daryl, and Holly respectively, Punch also features the seasoned performances of Kierston Wareing, Jamie Lomas, Daniel Fathers, Sarah Alexandra Marks, Marc Sears, and Marc Outbreak in pivotal roles.
The film debuted a sneak peek during this year's FrightFest in the UK on August 24. While a UK trailer dropped in July 2023, teasing British horror enthusiasts, the US, Digital, and VOD release is scheduled for January 2024, though the specific OTT platform remains undisclosed. A recent second trailer surfaced, offering a deeper, more ominous glimpse into the horrifying slasher's tale.
Punch follows the escapade of Uni student Frankie, embarking on a night out with friends in her hometown, blissfully unaware of the looming threat of the town's malevolent slasher, Mr. Punch. This urban myth, keeping a sinister watch on young girls breaking curfew or displaying promiscuity, embodies toxic masculinity, and eerie echoes of the eponymous puppet's voice as he pursues his prey, cackling maniacally.
The official synopsis reads: "Before heading back to university, Frankie craves one final night out in her coastal hometown, but sinister local legend Mr. Punch is on the prowl, and chaos ensues as Frankie and her friends fight for survival in this eerie slasher."
The latest trailer spooks viewers with snippets of the imminent thrill and relentless pursuit, culminating in a spine-chilling visual of Mr. Punch wielding his club, claiming it as the "right way" to chastise and instruct girls by unleashing brutal violence. Director Andy Edwards, in a 2022 interview with Starburst magazine, expressed his aspiration to craft an iconic British slasher akin to the renowned American horror figures like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Jason.
