GOAT Trends As Vettaiyan Takes Underwhelming Start At Box Office, Vijay vs Rajini Rivalry Reignited

The rivalry between two of Kollywood's biggest stars -- Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay-- was reignited once again on social media after the release of Vettaiyan. Before Rajinikanth's cop drama hit the big screens on October 11, fans of Vijay trended 'disaster Vettaiyan' on X, trolling the makers of the former for its poor advanced bookings. After Rajinikanth's film's opening day collections trailed behind GOAT by a huge margin, Thalaivar was criticised on social media with Vijay fans sharing memes.

GOAT vs Vettaiyan box office comparison

With a star-studded cast, including the likes of Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan , Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and more, Vettaiyan was supposed to take a blockbuster opening. However, early reviews hinted that the movie does not live up to the hype. Some noted that it fails to tread the line between commercial and thought-provoking. Despite this, the first-day collection of the film has been promising, but nowhere as good as Rajinikanth's Jailer, which is a 2023 blockbuster, or Vijay's latest GOAT, the highest-grossing Tamil film this year.

Vettaiyan earned around ₹30.00 crore in India nett on its first day for all languages. Meanwhile, Jailer collected ₹56.6 crore on day 1 in India in all languages in 2023 and GOAT amassed ₹52 crore on its opening day this year in September.

Netizens debate who has a stronger box office pull

Thalapathy Vijay fans trolled Vettaiyan by trending GOAT on Saturday. "#GOAT will remain the highest grosser of the year," commented a social media user. Another one wrote, "#Goat >>>> #vettaiyan (sic)."

A video also went viral on social media on October 10 with netizens alleging that Thalapathy Vijay watched Superstar Rajinikanth's GOAT first day first show. However, the same could not be verified since the man walking out of the cinema hall and swiftly getting into their vehicle, believed to be Vijay, was wearing a mask.
