Monsoon brings relief from the summer heat, but for many, it also brings a sense of lethargy and joint pain. These aches can worsen if you have a history of injuries. Why do these aches occur? According to an Ortho Beseda report, the fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, humidity, and precipitation during monsoons are to blame. An Apollo report adds that a sudden drop in temperature, common during this season, causes joint fluids to expand, increasing pressure and causing pain.
While severe pain should be addressed by a certified doctor, mild monsoon-related discomfort can often be managed with Ayurvedic remedies. Here's how Ayurveda explains and tackles these seasonal aches.
Ayurveda attributes joint pain during monsoons to imbalances in the body's natural 'doshas.' There are three primary doshas: vata, kapha, and pitta. Monsoon weather tends to disturb the vata and kapha doshas. Vata dosha, associated with air and space elements, increases when the weather is damp and cold, leading to a loss of moisture and increased friction in the joints, causing pain. Increased humidity during monsoons also affects the kapha dosha, leading to fluid accumulation in the joints.
Regular massage with warm herbal oils like sesame or eucalyptus can help alleviate joint pain by improving blood circulation and reducing stiffness.
Have foods such as ginger, turmeric, and garlic that induce a sense of warmth into your diet. These ingredients have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain and discomfort.
Gentle yoga poses and exercises that focus on flexibility and strength can help maintain joint health. Practicing hatha yoga can be particularly beneficial in balancing the doshas.
Staying hydrated helps maintain the balance of bodily fluids and can prevent the kapha dosha from becoming aggravated.
Applying warm compresses to affected areas can provide relief from pain and stiffness.
