Fire breaks out in Surat shopping complex, many feared trapped, several jump from top floor: Live Updates here

A massive fire has broken out in a shopping complex in Surat's Sarthana on Friday. The fire which broke out in the top half of the building has reportedly trapped a number of people in the building who were seen escaping the fire by jumping out of the windows. The source of the fire is unknown as of yet.

Ahmedabad municipal commissioner, Vijay Nehra has directed all tuition classes of Ahmedabad to be shut down immediately till fire safety measures are cross-checked in every tuition center in Ahmedabad, as per sources

Sources also report that no fire safety equipment was present in the premises. Speaking to Republic TV, Satish Sharma, commissioner of police, Surat has said:

"The survivors have given statements that the staircase was wooden which aggravated the fire and it went till the rooftop.  Surat police, forensics and fire emergencies are carrying out a joint investigation."

CM Vijay Rupani has directed all the investigating teams to find out the cause of the fire and whether or not fire safety measures were flouted, as per sources.

Sources: He has now directed Surat fire emergency services to check all tuition classes for fire safety measure adherence and to shut down the classes that are not in compliance.

A massive fire has broken out in a shopping complex in Surat's Sarthana on Friday. The fire which broke out in the top half of the building has reportedly trapped a number of people in the building who were seen escaping the fire by jumping out of the windows. The source of the fire is unknown as of yet.

Visuals show several people jumping out of the building in a bid to escape the copious black-grey fumes emerging from the top half. Visuals from the scene show people supporting the individuals who are trying to climb out of windows from the fourth floor where the fire broke out. It is also seen that the billboards and hoardings of the floors below the top floor are supporting the jumping people. After a while, the board is seen to fall on the cars parked below. A huge crowd is seen gathered around the complex.

As per sources, 22 fire tenders have been dispatched to the place by the Fire emergency services to contain the fire. More details regarding the casualties and the source of the fire are awaited.

Reports have suggested that the top floor of the shopping complex housed a coaching class center for students who were reportedly seen jumping out of the windows. Rescue operations are still underway in a bid to save the trapped students and other shop owners and customers in nearby shops.

Expressing his deepest regret on the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Gujarat government and local authorities to provide quick and necessary aid needed in the rescue operations.

Casualties are reported to by 15, as per ANI.

The Gujarat Cm too has taken cognizance of the incident and ordered an investigation along with declaring compensation for the bereaved children's families.

As per sources, the fire is believed to have started in ac ducts and compressors.

The Gujarat CM has also tweeted his condolences to families who have lost children to the fire.
