A part of a 40-year-old Majerhat bridge collapsed in New Alipore, Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, with many people and number of vehicles feared to be trapped beneath it. Early indications suggest that six people have been injured in the incident, with rescue operations going on.

Minutes after the bridge collapse, West Bengal's Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is presently in Darjeeling, ordered an investigation into this incident. She said, "Rescue operation is on. I have ordered an investigation. We will take all measures to ensure rescue operations are smooth. We will discuss how it happened later, first we have to provide immediate relief."

"We are very worried. We are receiving information from the rescue team on ground (Majerhat bridge collapse in Kolkata). We want to go back as soon as possible. There are no flights in the evening, we are unable to do so. Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later," she was further quoted by ANI as saying.

A section of the Majerhat bridge collapsed on Tuesday afternoon -- a time of the day when the area is said to be crowded. First visuals of the collapsed bridge showed a section of the flyover having cleanly collapsed, with the vehicles that were likely on it at that time that it fell still on hand.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader is presently in Darjeeling. While stating the lack of flights behind her non-availability at the incident location, Mamata reiterated that relief operations should be the main concern. "Police is investigating the matter, a detailed investigation will be done, our main focus right now is rescue and relief operations," she added.

Majerhat bridge serves as a railway overbridge near the Majerhat railway station. The Diamond Harbour road of which it is a part has been closed. The bridge connects Alipore to Behala, Taratalla and Chetla.
