The unabating rainfall that has caused a major flood situation in Kerala appears set to continue for the next 24 hours, as per a bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued on Wednesday afternoon, even as a Red Alert has been issued in the state. Sixty-seven people have lost their lives in the flood. Dams that were opened to prevent overflowing continue to remain so because of the rainfall in the catchment area. The water discharged from the Idukki Cheruthoni reservoir is the highest in the last 10 days, and is expected to rise to 1200 cumecs. Previously, 750 cumecs water was recorded as the highest level of outflow from the reservoir, which was released during last week's rain. The water level of the Periyar river is also expected to increase.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a statement said, "We're witnessing something that has never happened before in the history of Kerala. Almost all dams are opened. Most of our water treatment plants are submerged, motors are damaged. We're keeping all this in mind but our priority is to get drinking water to the people"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also assured help to the state. He took to Twitter and stated,"Had a detailed discussion with Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the unfortunate flood situation in the state. Centre stands firmly with the people of Kerala and is ready to provide any assistance needed. @CMOKerala"

The Kerala CM informed that officials are taking part in the rescue and relief operations. He said that the rain will continue for the next four days and asked the citizens to be prepared. The CM further stated that several other states have come forward to help the state in the crisis.

The neighbouring state, Karnataka, has also started gearing up to deal with any situation that arises. The Chief Minister of the state, HD Kumaraswamy, directed the District Collectors of Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga districts to be on high alert in view of heavy rainfall. He appealed to concerned district in-charges and ministers to review the situation. Moreover, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended its services from Bengaluru to Kerala's Kannanur, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod. It has also cancelled its premium services in Mangalore, Subramanya, Dharmasthala, and Kundapur. Only express service (Karnataka Sarige) buses operating via Charmadi to Mangaluru.

Below is the IMD's bulletin.
