Terrorists stormed inside an Army camp in Sunjuwan area of Jammu in early hours on Saturday

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR:

  • Terrorists stormed inside an Army camp in Sunjuwan area of Jammu in early hours on Saturday.
  • The attack took place at about 4:45 am IST on Saturday when 3-4 terrorists entered the Sunjuwan Army Station
  • Sunjuwan Army Station houses families of soldiers
  • The attack at Sunjuwan Army camp is approximately 5-6 KMs away from the Jammu city and comes one day after the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. 
  • Approximately around 6 pm, Republic learnt that one terrorist had been gunned down by the Indian forces.
  • Recoveries included - 1 AK47, 8 grenades, 1 hunting knife, 1 JeM flag and 6 magazines. 
  • Around 7 pm, the Army confirmed at a press briefing that two soldiers had been martyred in the Jammu terror strike. The Army officials added that two terrorists have been killed. Furthermore, recoveries prove that Jaish-e-Mohammed is behind the attack, the Army added.
  • 'Until the operations conclude, it wouldn't be right for me to comment', the Home Minister Rajnath Singh said when details of the situation were sought from him, earlier in the day.
  • At 9:05 pm, Republic TV received confirmation that a third terrorist had been neutralised in the Sunjuwan Army Camp.
  • Approximately around 11 am, Republic TV learnt that the fourth JeM terrorist, holed up inside Army camp. had been neutralised.

Terrorists stormed inside an Army camp in Sunjuwan area of Jammu in early hours on Saturday. The attack took place at about 4:45 am IST on Saturday when 3-4 terrorists entered the Sunjuwan Army Station located 30 km from the International border and just 6 km from Jammu city. The Home Minister had earlier briefed the Prime Minister about the attack. The firing is said to have stopped at 6 am.

Approximately around 6 pm, Republic learnt that one terrorist had been gunned down by the Indian forces. As can be seen in the picture, the terrorist wore the Indian Army uniform to disguise himself. This has been a typical trait in Pakistan's constant Fidayeen attack in the valley. Meanwhile, the operations continue to be live and ongoing and the forces confirm that all the terrorists involved in the attack have been 'contained'. Recoveries include- 1 AK47, 8 grenades, 1 hunting knife, 1 JeM flag and 6 magazines. 

Earlier in the day, an official statement by the Indian Army read,

"In the early hours today after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on the periphery, some terrorist entered the family accommodation complex in Sunjuwan military camp. The Quick Response Teams have cordoned off the area and isolated the terrorists, who are holed up in a few houses. In operations to evacuate families, so far one JCO (Junior commissioned officer) has been martyred while six persons including three women and children have suffered injuries. Due to presence of women and children in the housing colony, the operations are being progressed cautiously to minimize casualties."

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, condemned the attack on Twitter. He wrote, "News from Jammu & the encounter in #Sunjwan is extremely disturbing. Hoping for an end to the encounter without any loss of life among the security forces & their families."

Minister of State for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Dr Jitendra Singh, tweeted, "Where are the #Kashmir apologists who are always ready to tweet even on subjects not remotely connected with them but who neither have the courage nor conviction to utter a word of condemnation against Pakistan?
