Several people killed after compound wall collapses due to heavy rain in Pune's Kondhwa area: Updates

Several people were killed after a portion of the compound wall of a residential complex collapsed on shanties following incessant rains in Pune on Saturday.

Update at 10:05 AM: "An investigation will be conducted into the incident. We are giving a 'work stop' order so that no work can be continued at the construction site here," says Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak

Update at 9:31 AM: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed sadness over the loss of lives in the Kondhwa area due to the collapse of wall in the complex. He further added that he has "directed Pune Collector to conduct an in-depth enquiry" in the matter.

Update at 9:28 AM: As per officials, 15 people are killed and two have suffered injuries in the incident.

Update at 8:55 AM: "We repeated the search operation again but did not found anyone else trapped inside. Even the locals present have said that no one is missing. We are discussing with our team on whether to call the rescue operation off": NDRF

Update at 8:45 AM: "Our team is investigating the reasons behind the incident. Firm action will be taken against those responsible. We will check whether proper permissions were taken and safety measures were followed," says Pune police commissioner K Venkatesham.

As per police officials, 15 people were killed and two have suffered injuries. The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital.

The shanties were built for the labourers working at a construction site nearby, the police said.

The incident took place around 1:45 am on Friday night in the Kondhawa area as per police officials. Several parts of Maharashtra are witnessing heavy rainfall since Friday.

Police, fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, the police said.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department in Mumbai, very active monsoon conditions over west coast, with deep westerlies are there. Heavy rainfall is expected in Mumbai, Thane & around the west coast.
