Over 5,000 gym owners in Delhi are panic-stricken after the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee ordered the sealing of all Gyms, Yoga and Fitness centres that came into existence in Delhi after August 12, 2008. In a bid to get relief from the order, the owners of these centres and a delegation of BJP leaders will meet on Tuesday with the Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. According to information received, a delegation of gym operators under the supervision of Bhupender Dhawan (Dronachary Awardee), have met  BJP leaders and discussed the various issues caused by the Apex Court’s order.

'I am worried, how can such decisions come without any notice?'

Gym operator Dr Prateek said that they will lose out on a lot of business due to this sudden stoppage. “I am worried, how can such decisions come without any notice. Although it is a decision of the monitoring committee appointed by the Apex Court and we respect it but it will put a dent in our pockets for the time being. We have hope that the Central Government will come out with some sort of relief,” said Prateek.

Senior BJP leader and the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta agrees with the stance of the gym owners and said that their demands are totally justified. The BJP leader added that the party stands with them because it was during the tenure of the Congress Government and it was in their Master Plan 2008 where it stated that no gyms could be opened in Delhi either in the commercial or residential areas and Gupta agrees that it was completely unjustified.

Vijender Gupta has provided assurance to the owners

Vijender Gupta has provided assurance to the owners of these facilities that their jobs and livelihood will not be taken away and that justice will follow. Another fitness establishments operation Harmeet Singh said that due to the order having been passed by the monitoring committee, “we do not have any other option but to help ourselves,” he added. “We will figure out some way or another. We hope that tomorrow’s meeting with Hardeep Singh Puri will be fruitful,” he concluded.

BJP’s General Secretary Siddharthan making a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “Hum Fit toh India Fit” said that that this move goes totally against PM Modi’s vision of a fitter India. “In such a situation, the decision to close the gyms which help in fitness is not justified,” Siddharthan added.
