Rescued not too long ago, Delhi's last elephant Lakshmi was sent to a rehabilitation centre in Haryana on Friday morning. After reaching the rehabilitation centre, Lakshmi was fed, given a proper bath and was examined thoroughly by the veterinarians. Inspector Sultan Singh of the Ban Santour rehabilitation centre stated that -

"She was brought here at around 6 in the morning. We have trained mahouts who will take care of Lakshmi. We have a staff which will ensure that the elephant does not face any problem here."

Lakshmi being taken care of

Adding to his statements, the Inspector said, "She is the fifth elephant here. Lakshmi was brought here as the owner failed to produce original documents to the Delhi police. We will vaccinate her and will take proper care of her".

Lakshmi was rescued on Tuesday night, near east Delhi's Akshardham temple and the police also arrested mahout Saddam on charges of fleeing with the jumbo on July 6.

The FIR for missing Lakshmi has filed two months ago after her caretaker purportedly hid her. Lakshmi is Delhi's last elephant, she was sent by forest department officials to a rehabilitation centre. This was in accordance with a Delhi High Court order which stated that elephants in Delhi should be kept away from human habitation as it does not provide a natural habitat for these animals. 

Currently, a non-bailable permanent arrest warrant has been issued against Yusuf Ali, owner of Lakshmi, under IPC sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions).

Rescuing Lakshmi

Officials of the forest and wildlife department had earlier said that the locations for searching Lakshmi included Mayur Vihar, Akshardham, and Shakarpur, where the elephant was last seen on July 6, when forest department officials had gone to seize it. The forest department further stated that if we are able to locate the elephant, we will seize it immediately. There's no stay on its seizure. It will be brought to the forest department's nursery at ITO and sent to Ban Santoor elephant rehabilitation centre after a medical examination is conducted and necessary arrangements are made for its transportation.
