The ongoing protest by the agitated East Delhi Municipal Corporation sanitation workers has aggravated on Thursday as the sanitation workers have taken their protests in front of the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence. They are demanding:

  • Regular payment of salaries
  • Regularization of the work schedule of the temporary workers and clearance of pending dues

These sanitation workers have been protesting the East Delhi since September 12.

Ever since the protest has begun, the sanitation workers have not been collecting garbage from many parts of the East Delhi area which has resulted in creation of a huge dump in the region. Bipin Bihari, Mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation had blamed the Arvind Kejriwal government for the inconvenience and claimed that the AAP government has not released funds due to which the salaries of the workers have been pending, leading to the strike entering its 23rd day.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal took it to his Twitter handle blame the BJP for instigating the sanitation workers for the protests. He wrote, "Sanitation workers are protesting outside my house. BJP have lied to them and instigated them. I am going to talk to them anf tell them the truth. I will put all the facts in front of them and the people of Delhi".

In another tweet, Arvind Kejriwal expressed his concerns about the cleanliness in Delhi, taking a jibe at the BJP. He wrote in the tweet, "I am extremely worried about the cleanliness in Delhi. BJP and the MCD workers have shaken the management of cleanliness in Delhi. I am worried about my sanitation workers. They have to sit on a protest in every two months for regulation of their salaries".

While the workers have been still waiting for the funds to be released from the authorities, the Delhi government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that they have agreed to release Rs 500 crore to pay off the pending salaries of the EDMC sanitation workers who are on an indefinite strike in the city.

"It has become a common knowledge that sanitation workers are abstaining from work in East Delhi. As a result, there is a huge amount of garbage that has piled up. Of course, there are differences on how the issue is to be tackled,” the SC bench had asserted.

After hearing the SC’s point of view, advocate Rahul Mehra from Delhi government told the bench that they would release Rs 500 crore without prejudice to the rights of the sanitation workers.
