East Delhi Sanitation Workers protest enter 26th day, their demands still unfulfilled

Days after the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) sanitation workers protested outside the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to get their demand for regular payment of salaries fulfilled, they have taken their protest to the Jantar Mantar in the national capital. The sanitation workers have decided to take their demonstration marching from the Jantar Mantar to the Parliament such the BJP-led MCDs cater to their demands.

As their strike has entered the 26th day, the sanitation workers have refused to get back to their jobs until the Delhi CM fulfils their demands. They are demanding:

• Regular payment of salaries
• Increment in salaries
• Cashless medical cards

It has also been reported that the protesters were attacked by the police with lathi charges to control their agitation.

"We have been beaten by the police and women have been hurt with their lathis. We have not received our salaries for the past many months. This is not how it is going to work. We will not work until our demands are met," said women protesters fighting for their rights at the Jantar Mantar, Delhi.

Earlier, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also tweeted that he will come forward and speak to the sanitation worker on this matter, as he accused BJP of playing dirty politics and misleading the sanitation workers. But reportedly, he has not met the sanitation workers till yet. 

While the workers have been still waiting for the funds to be released from the authorities, the Delhi government had also told the Supreme Court that they have agreed to release Rs 500 crore to pay off the pending salaries of the EDMC sanitation workers who are on an indefinite strike in the city. 

The sanitation workers of East Delhi have been on strike since September 12. With the feud between the Delhi government and the sanitation workers continues, the problems of East Delhi residents increases because of the increasing garbage in the area.
