In a dangerous incident that occurred on the Jogeshwari highway in Mumbai, a fashion designer and her driver narrowly escaped the clutches of death after an eight feet iron rod of an under-construction Metro bridge fell on their cab.
Rinku Jain escaped unhurt in the incident that was propelled by the negligence of the Metro administration. She was traveling in the front seat of the cab next to the driver as the rod fell. The momentum of the fall was so impactful that it pierced through the windshield of the car into the dashboard, leaving Rinku untouched just shy of a few inches. The police reached the spot instantly after the accident and successfully removed the iron rod from the car.
The onset of the monsoon has led to a number of accidents across the city, with negligence of the civic bodies and the authorities being attributed. A portion of a building collapsed in the Dongri area of Mumbai on 16 July killing 14, whereas at least 16 people were killed and over 40 others are injured after a compound wall collapsed due to heavy rains in Malad East area on July 2.
Before that, a pedestrian was killed on June 13 after a portion of a cladding fell on him at the bustling Churchgate railway station. Madhukar Narvekar (62) was passing through Churchgate station building when the portion, part of the 81 ft x 54 ft mural of Mahatma Gandhi, fell on him, a railway official said.
