In what appears to be a major security lapse, a man scaled a wall of the Mumbai airport on Thursday and walked up to a SpiceJet plane on the runway that was readying for take-off. The incident took place at the Mumbai airport when the SpiceJet place SG634 was getting ready to take off for Bengaluru. As soon as the man entered the runway where the SpiceJet place was standing, the pilot of the flight shut down the engines to ensure that no accident happens.
"The pilots of the SpiceJet plane showed presence of mind and immediately shut down the engines to avert any accident when they saw the man walking up the plane that was standing on runway 27," said the DGCA official.
The incident at the Mumbai Airport at around 1:30 pm when the 26-year-old man hailing from Sion in the city jumped from the south side of runway 27 and crossed the perimeter intrusion identification system. As per the officials, the man appeared to be of unsound mind and has been arrested by the CISF, a senior official of the aviation regulator DGCA said. The incident is being probed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with an enquiry ordered by the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), officials said.
In a video of the incident that has been circulating on social media, the man can be seen walking calmly to the SpiceJet plane and trying to "inspect" it. As soon as he goes near the place, a yellow jeep can also be seen, pulling behind him.
Pointing out the security lapse, actor Gul Panag took to Twitter and shared the video, questioning the actions of CISF at the Mumbai Airport when the man entered the runway. Calling it unbelievable, she asked how did the man enter the runaway and got so close to the engine.
