Mumbai groom arrested from his wedding procession for stealing mobile phone

While the groom's family was on its way back home after completing the rituals of the wedding on Tuesday, the family suddenly realized that the man of the night, Ajay Dhote, was nowhere to be seen.

While the groom's family was on its way back home after completing the rituals of the wedding on Tuesday, the family suddenly realized that the man of the night, Ajay Dhote, was nowhere to be seen. Not just the groom but his friend Altaf Mirza, who was last seen dancing, also disappeared. No one could imagine that Mumbai Police had whisked Dhote and Mirza away  the two had stolen a cellphone on Monday morning.

The groom and his friend was arrested under sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and Article 34 (acts done by several persons in common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The day before, the Tilak Nagar police station received a complaint from a woman who said her cellphone had been snatched.

A women and her daughter were walking near Amar Mahal junction in Chembur at around 9:30 am when two men on a 220cc motorbike snatched her cellphone worth Rs 10,000 and rode off. 

Immediately, the woman filed a complaint at the Tilak Nagar police station following which the police checked the CCTV in the area. To the Police surprise, the bike’s number plate was covered with tape. Therefore, the police had to make inquiries in Shivaji Nagar and Govandi, after which they managed to ascertain the identity of the two thieves to be Ajay Sunil Dhote and Altaf Mirza.

The police believe the duo sold the phone on Monday itself.

The police went to Dhote home in Shivaji Nagar. The police found itself in the middle of a wedding party since Dhote had got married in Bandra court hours earlier. They picked up Mirza and Dhote, who were taken to Tilak Nagar police station and placed under arrest.

The police believe Dhote and Mirza targeted women and followed the same modus operandi multiple times.
