Minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a historical speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit in Davos, Congress President Rahul Gandhi questioned the PM. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Dear PM,..Welcome to Switzerland!... Please tell DAVOS why 1% of India’s population gets 73% of its wealth? I’m attaching a report for your ready reference.”
Congress leader Manish Tewari also attacked Prime Minister Modi and tweeted out, “Mr PM- I do hope you acknowledge that the UPA with an average of 7.8 % Growth Rate of GDP year on year for 10 long years from 2004 -05 as the base year that corresponds to 9.8% at 2011-12 base year had a role to play in growing it six times.”
The scathing attack comes on the day when PM Modi is in Davos engaging with the world community and trying to set an agenda. In his address, Prime Minister Modi spoke about Global economy, terrorism, protectionism et al. Incidentally, his speech came close on the heels of when the United States slapped tariffs on imports from China and South Korea.
Rahul Gandhi quoted a news agency’s report in his tweet. According to the report, a new survey has depicted that the richest 1 per cent in India cornered 73 per cent of the wealth generated in the country. The story also depicted the 67 crore Indians comprising the population's poorest half as seeing their wealth rise by just 1 per cent.
