Hack:

  • While contesting in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, he spent Rs. 85 lakhs and still won, but a few who spent Rs. 5 crores still lost.
  • He even agreed to the reporter's offer of money in 'cash' and the favours needed in 'campaigns, vehicles, and petrol'

Weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, when India will once again re-affirm its role as a beacon of democracy with an estimated 900 million voters expected to exercise their democratic franchise, an explosive sting by Republic Bharat has laid bare the essence of Indian democracy- as elected politicians walk with a price-tag across parties, betraying the citizens who vote them into office.

In a series of on-camera sting operations, the Republic Bharat special investigation team has stung three sitting Members of Parliament (MPs), revealing a disgraceful and condemnable sidelining of the aspirations of Indian citizens and attempts by the elected representatives to further their own ends.

The sting operation brought to the electorate 3 MPs from 3 different parties in 3 states (Bihar, UP, Punjab) with one common takeaway: admissions on hidden camera about a hefty price list for favours and votes in election season.

Harinarayan Rajbhar, a BJP neta who was voted to power from Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, after an initial dither went on to divulge explosive details. Wary of a crackdown, he sought favours in-kind from the Republic Bharat reporter instead of asking for cash directly.

Here are the few things the MP revealed:

  • He said, "I contested the 2014 General Elections. There were a few who spent around Rs 5 crores but couldn't win. I spent only Rs 85 lakhs and I won the seat."
  • He told the undercover reporter, "However there are situations when we need money to buy votes. Money is distributed. So we will see what the situation demands."
  • He also told the Republic Bharat reporter, "We need is the promotion of campaigns, travel, petrol expenses. These are the things where we could use the help. Are you understanding what I'm saying?"
  • He asserted to the reporter, "Look when we win elections with your support, your work will be prioritised."

After the undercover reporter of Republic Bharat's SIT team made an offer, here is how the conversation went ahead:
