The constituency of Bandra East (Vandre East) threw up a surprise result on Thursday as the sitting mayor of Mumbai and Shiv Sena leader Vishwanath Mahadeshwar lost to Zeeshan Baba Siddique, the candidate of Congress. This serves as a significant jolt to the Shiv Sena as it is considered as one of its bastions. The Thackeray family resides in this constituency. The other important contestant from the seat was Anil Chitre of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

Shiv Sena’s bastion

SS leader Prakash (Bala) Sawant won from this constituency in two consecutive elections. In 2009, he defeated the Congress candidate Chandurkar Janardan Chandrappa with a margin of nearly 10,000 votes. This was followed by his victory against BJP’s Krishna Dhondu Parkar in the 2014 Assembly elections. Due to his unfortunate demise, a by-election had to be held in 2015. The SS gave the party ticket to his wife Trupti Sawant, who trounced former chief minister Narayan Rane. As she was denied the opportunity to contest in the current election, she filed nomination as an Independent. As per the Election Commission of India figures, she received more than 20,000 votes thereby hurting the chances of Mahadeshwar.
