Delhi polls: BJP to counter Kejriwal with Hasina govt's remark on NRC

The BJP is mulling a strategy to counter Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on his remarks regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and its Delhi unit President Manoj Tiwari using the Sheikh Hasina-led Bangladesh government’s positive comments on the issue. Kejriwal had recently launched a tirade against Tiwari, alleging that the Bihar born leader would be the first person to leave Delhi in the eventuality of the NRC being conducted. Thereafter, Tiwari sent a legal notice to the Delhi CM that his statement was "false, unverified, misleading deliberately" and made with an intention to disturb law and order. According to sources, BJP would publicise the positive comments of the Bangladesh government and pit them against Kejriwal’s remarks.

The plan 

Hasina held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary, Shahidul Haque, stated that his nation had accepted that the implementation of the NRC was an internal matter of India. The BJP will also focus on Kejriwal’s alleged attempt to communalize the situation. A senior leader of the party contended that the Delhi CM had also insulted the people of Bihar and the Purvanchal region.

He said, "The fact that Kejriwal said Tiwariji will need to leave Delhi if he implements the NRC was not just a comment on him but on Biharis and Purvanchalis. His ignorance about the NRC is in stark contrast with what Bangladesh has said on the NRC."

BJP’s NRC drive

The NRC has become a constant feature in the speeches of Home Minister Amit Shah. The necessity for conducting this process has been echoed in many BJP-ruled states such as Karnataka. As the Assembly elections in Delhi are due next year, the party is leaving no stone unturned to wrest political power. For, it suffered a humiliating defeat in 2015, when the Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party won a whopping 66 out of the total 70 seats.
