The Election Commission has granted Kamal Haasan's party Makkal Needhi Maim (MNM) 'battery torch' as a symbol to contest the elections. 

MNM chief Kamal Haasan welcoming the development said that the party will strive to become the 'torch bearers' for Tamil Nadu and Indian politics.

He tweeted: "MNM thanks the Election commission for granting us the "Battery Torch" symbol for the forthcoming elections. So appropriate. @maiamofficial will endeavour to be the "Torch-Bearer" for a new era in TN and Indian politics."

The Election Commission allotted symbols to 39 political parties on Sunday. 

Earlier in February, Kamal Haasan announced that his Makkal Needhi Maiam would contest all 39 the seats in Tamil Nadu solo in the coming Lok Sabha polls, indicating a shift in its policy to forge alliances.  He had also announced that his party would contest the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with like-minded parties.

"We are trying to serve good for the people with clean hands. We are trying to keep our hands clean by not allying with any of the Dravidian parties," said the 64-year-old Haasan.

His party Makkal Needhi Maiam entered in its second year in February 2019. He had launched his political party on  21 February 2018.

In the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, veteran actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan's party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) had expressed its solidarity with the kins of the martyred CRPF jawans. The MNM released a statement extending its complete support for any action, and mentioned that party's chief Kamal Haasan had called up J&K Governor's advisor regarding the same.

We, along with the people of India are observing the dedicated, indomitable spirit of you and your team during this dire circumstance. Each and every citizen of the nation stand by you and support all your actions regardless of political bias,” Kamal Haasan had assured.
