Tom Vadakkan spoke live to Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami on Thursday, hours after ending his two-decade-plus long association with the Congress party and joining the BJP.

"Today, I'm happy to inform you I'm a free man. They've not given me any onerous task", Vadakkan said, shortly after being inducted into the BJP by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

He reiterated what he had said in the press conference of his induction, affirming that the party's questioning of the armed forces in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack and subsequent Indian Air Force strike on Pakistan's terror bases across the Line of Control had been the trigger for his departure from the party.

"Pulwama was an issue I felt about strongly, was told I can't speak anything else than what the script was. My country is more important than belonging to any political party", Vadakkan said.

Tom Vadakkan had been the National communication Secretary for the Indian National Congress. He was considered a close aide of UPA chairperson and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. While welcoming him to the BJP, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Vadakkan "had decided to join the BJP after getting impressed by the policy programs of Narendra Modi and equally getting disenchanted by the Congress party. He is most welcome."
