After months of controversy and war-of-words, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday emerged victorious in the Gujarat Assembly Elections.  The BJP won the election claiming a clear majority of 99 seats. Meanwhile, the Rahul Gandhi led-Congress trailed in second with 77 seats, followed by the Bharatiya Tribal Party (two) and NCP (one), while independent candidates won three seats.

To form a government in the state, a party or a coalition required at least 92 seats in the 182-member Assembly.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani won the Rajkot West constituency on Monday after trailing behind Congress candidate Indranil Rajyaguru in the initial trends. CM Rupani’s seat is considered to be of great significance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi contested from Rajkot West as Gujarat chief minister back in 2002. This seat has been with the BJP for past 32 years.

The results act as a setback for Rahul Gandhi who took over as the president of the Congress Party on Saturday, succeeding his mother Sonia Gandhi, who had helmed the organization since 1998, merely a few days ago.

According to the exit poll results presented by CVoter on December 14, the BJP was projected to win 108 seats out of the total 182. The Congress party, meanwhile, was projected by CVoter to win a total of 74 seats, as compared to just 61 seats in the 2012 Gujarat Assembly Elections.

The elections for 182-seat Assembly were held on December 9 and 14, after an intense campaign, which was dominated by a face-off between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. In the 2012 elections, the BJP had won 115 seats while the Congress emerged victorious on 61 seats. The BJP has been in power in the state since 1995, winning consecutive elections in the home state of Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.
