In a never-before seen bonhomie between former rivals who were bitterly fighting in the past, Mayawati will campaign for Mulayam Singh Yadav on April 19 in Mainpuri, The Mainpuri joint rally is one of the prospective joint rallies which will be held ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Mayawati and Mulayam Singh had a bitter relationship since 1995, with both leaders contesting fiercely fighting poll battles against each others through the years.

Here's a quick recap of their arch-rivalry:

In 1993, SP-BSP had formed an alliance to stop the BJP's winning spree after the Ram temple movement. Then SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP founder Kanshi Ram had joined hands and succeeded in leaving a mark in the state politics by winning 167 Assembly seats. The BSP had got 67 seats and SP 109.

The alliance, however, did not last and ended in 1995 after the infamous Meera Bai Marg guest house incident wherein SP workers misbehaved with Mayawati.

Since then Mayawati-Mulayam rivarly began where they both bitterly fought each other and tore apart each other in media briefings.

On Thursday, BSP supremo Mayawati asked her coalition partner Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to contest the Amethi seat in the Uttar Pradesh polls, sources said. Amethi is Rahul Gandhi's constituency and a Congress bastion. The development came after Priyanka Gandhi met with Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad in Meerut on Wednesday.

Mayawati and Akhilesh were not happy with Congress UP General Secretary meeting the Bhim Army chief, sources said.

For Mayawati, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's visit to Meerut to see Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad is an attempt to damage BSP core vote, said sources.

On Thursday, the BSP held a core committee meeting at its headquarters in Lucknow in presence of Akhilesh Yadav. All BSP coordinators were called for this meeting.
