Maharashtra: 'Even a calcium shot can't revive Congress,' says Owaisi

While addressing a public meeting for the upcoming October 21 Maharashtra elections on Sunday, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi said that the Congress party has been "wiped out" from the landscape. He further added that it couldn't be revived even if it was administered a "calcium injection”.

Congress accused of ignorance

He went on to accuse the top leadership of the Sonia Gandhi-led party of ignoring important elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. "The Congress has been wiped out from the political spectrum of the country. It can't be revived even by a calcium injection," he said.

Owaisi also hit out at the BJP. The Hyderabad MP said that the ruling party has passed a bill in Himachal Pradesh that makes it mandatory for a citizen to give a one-month notice for religious conversion. He also said that he won’t be surprised if PM Modi brings such a bill in the parliament.

AIMIM's take on upcoming elections

On a related note, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra in-coalition with Prakash Ambedkar’s Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) under the aegis of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). The VBA had won Aurangabad Lok Sabha seat.

It had also managed to split votes of Dalits and Muslims which had turned out to affect the prospects of many candidates of the Congress in Maharashtra during the polls. Additionally, in the 2014 elections, AIMIM had won two seats.

Right now, for the forthcoming Maharashtra elections, the party has been in talks with BBM leader Prakash Ambedkar. However, the alliance looks dicey and the talks have faced hurdles over the issue of seat allocation in the elections as Owaisi’s party is now upset with BBM offering it just a handful of seats. The situation looks grim but Ambedkar, while talking to the media, said that the party is always open for discussions and that its doors were not yet closed for anyone.
