Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Majeed Memon had recently issued a controversial statement against the ally Congress. He stated that Congress should be held responsible if the BJP Shiv Sena alliance wins the recently conducted Maharashtra Assembly elections. The NCP has distanced itself from Memon’s statement claiming his views are personal and not in line with the party’s views.

'Not NCP's views'

"The statements issued by NCP leader Majeed Memon are his personal views. His statements have no relation to the party. Congress and NCP have fought the elections together and will continue fighting to throw away the casteist parties," NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik's tweet on Tuesday read.

Memon accuses Congress

Memon had reportedly accused the Congress leaders in the state of not working hard enough during the campaign and added that "if we do not get success, then the Congress will be responsible."

The 288 seats Maharashtra assembly elections were held on October 21. The counting of votes is scheduled on October 24. However, a majority of the exit polls have suggested that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is dominating the election and is likely to retain power. Union Minister and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar has predicted that the BJP led National Democratic Alliance will win more than 222 seats in the state.

The ruling alliance of BJP-Sena contested on 164-124 seats respectively. Out of the 164 seats of BJP, the party gave 12 seats to its other allies which included the likes of Narayan Rane's son Nitesh Rane of the Maharashtra Swabhimaan Paksh and RSP candidate and sitting MLA From Daund, Rahul Kul.

NCP and Congress, on the other hand, had contested elections on 125 seats each in the recently held assembly polls while 38 seats were given to smaller allies across the state. However, the two parties faced a mounting problem of their leaders shifting to rival parties before the polls.
