Update at 7:16 PM: BJP MLA Rakesh Singh Baghel and his supporters protest outside the District Magistrate office demanding arrest of BJP MP Rakesh Tripathi.
In what can be seen as a major embarrassment for the BJP, two party lawmakers from Uttar Pradesh engaged in a shameful brawl and hit each other with fists and shoes at an official meeting on Wednesday. During a meeting for a project in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar, BJP MP Sharad Tripathi and MLA Rakesh Baghel exchanged blows after an argument broke out over the placement of names on a foundation stone of a project.
The incident took place during a meeting of the District Action Plan Committee at the Collectorate in front of a number of other party members who were attending the meeting. The scuffle broke out after BJP MP Sharad Tripathi asked why his name was not mentioned on the foundation stone. BJP MLA Rakesh Baghel revealed that it was his decision.
The visuals show BJP leader Sharad Tripathi attacking his colleague Rakesh Singh with a shoe during a public meeting after a heated war of words. The argument turned ugly as the two leaders got into jostling, pushing each other and ultimately fisticuff. Sharad Tripathi hit Rakesh Baghel with his shoe to which he retaliated by slapping the MP.
Even as the police present during the meeting tried to control the situation, the lawmakers kept on fighting.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh police have taken the incident into cognizance. UP chief minister office has summoned both the BJP leaders for questioning.
An eye witness said that the incident began with a heated argument between the two BJP leaders which turned into a physical fight.
