Sikkim: Polling team felicitates the oldest voter of Poklol Kamrang

Polling has begun in Assam on Monday, October 21, with people queued up at polling booths for the by-elections for four assembly constituencies. The Poklok Kamrang Assembly constituency witnessed the oldest voter Ms Sumitra Rai. The 107-year-old woman cast her vote at the Government Secondary School in Kamrang Polling Station on Monday. The polling team at the station also felicitated the elderly woman.

The Assam by-polls

According to reports, Over 6,77,367 voters will exercise their franchise in 830 polling booths to decide the fate of 20 candidates contesting in the by-elections for Ratabari, Sonari, Rangapara and Jania assembly constituencies. The security arrangements have been tightened up in all polling station. Flying squads, static surveillance teams, and video surveillance teams will monitor activities on the ground.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who is the President of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), would be part of a triangular contest with Sikkim Democratic Front’s (SDF) Moses Rai and Sikkim Republican Party’s (SRP) Yadhu Kumar Rai in the Poklong-Kamrang constituency in South Sikkim district.

In the last assembly election in Assam, BJP won Ratabari, Sonari and Rangapara seats while Congress won the Jania seat. The by-election was necessitated as Kripanath Mallah (Ratabari), Tapan Gogoi (Sonari) and Pallab Lochan Das (Rangapara) of BJP and Congress MLA of Jania, Abdul Kalaque won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

BJP & SKM alliance

Earlier the BJP tied up with the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) ahead of the Sikkim by-polls. The BJP who has been trying to get power in the State received a major boost last year. 10 Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) MLAs had joined the BJP giving it the added augmentation that it needed.
