The Congress on Tuesday made an effort to claim the copyright on the slogan 'Bharat Mata ki jai' stating it was their party which had initially introduced it during the nation's independence.

Addressing a rally in Gandhinagar, Gujarat with the elections looming, the party tried to assert itself as nationalist when its national spokesperson Shaktisinh Goyal said that during the independence struggle, leaders from Congress fought the battle and they came up with the slogan.

"Congress party fought the freedom struggle. We fought against the Britishers. They had no one in their family whose name they can even use and thus they keep using the name of Congress leaders till date. And also they use our slogans as well. When we were fighting for freedom, Congress used the slogan of Bharat Mata ki Jai for the first time. Thus that was Congress's slogan. Hence we will also say Bharat mata ki jai. Bharat mata ki jai," he said.

Though, it seems, Congress has quietly forgotten how one of its very own leaders had in 2018, before the state elections in Rajasthan, blocked a fellow party worker from chanting Bharat Mata ki Jai, and instead ordered him to shout 'Sonia Gandhi zindabad' and 'Rahul Gandhi zindabad'.

In a video posted by BJP spokesperson Tajinder Singh Bagga, Congress workers were seen assembled on a stage around former state education minister Dr BD Kalla. A party supporter immediately next to him begins to chant "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", but is unceremoniously stopped.

After a brief intervention, even as laughter breaks out in the crowd, something is explained to the chanter, after which he changes his line, and instead chants "Sonia Gandhi (Zindabad) Rahul Gandhi (Zindabad) Ahmed Patel (Zindabad) Sachin Pilot (Zindabad)..." and other leaders' names.
