With the elections looming ever so close, the Congress party seems to have found a new narrative to woo the voters and attack the Bharatiya Janata Party in the form of 'Desh bhakti' card. Party's national spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil, in the presence of his party chief Rahul Gandhi, addressed a massive gathering in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, wherein he belittled BJP's role in the freedom movement and suggested that it was his party which coined the slogan 'Bharat Mata ki jai'.

"Congress party fought the freedom struggle. We fought against the Britishers. They had no one in their family whose name they can even use and thus they keep using the name of Congress leaders till date. And also they use our slogans as well. When we were fighting for freedom, Congress used the slogan of Bharat Mata ki Jai for the first time. Thus that was Congress's slogan. Hence we will also say Bharat mata ki jai. Bharat mata ki jai," he said.

Though, his views were immediately opposed by the BJP, with its MP Subramanian Swamy saying that Congress claiming 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogan' is the most ridiculous thing. While talking to Republic TV, he said:

"Everytime they lose the propoganda and the main issues, they start speaking like this. This time also he started saying that he is Janeu Dhaari and he is a Hindu. Now, to say that Bharat Matat Ki Jai Slogan is a Congress slogan is the most ridiculous thing. 'Jai Hind' That Indra Gandhi used to use was INA. It was coined by Subash Chandra Bose and they were against Subash Chandra Bose. It has been a national slogan right from the time when Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay said Vande Mataram".
