With less than three months for the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is back to playing Hindu politics. Senior Congress leader, Digvijaya Singh, on Wednesday openly expressed himself as a "better Hindu" and termed BJP leaders as "Nautankis".

"A reporter asked him: "Recently, you met Shankaracharya Swaroopanand at Varanasi, now you will meet one more saint here. So, do we start believing that Congress is on the same road as BJP?"

To which the senior Congress leader started a "Better Hindu" competition:

"BJP ne theka le liya hai? Mai Hindu hoon aur insab BJP ke Nautanki walo se mai zyada better Hindu hoon. Humne Narmada ji ke parikrama ke hai, Kitne inn nautankiyoon ne ki hai? Koi theka le liya hai inn logon ne? Swami Swaroopanand Ji mere guru hai aur aaj se nahi hai 1983 se hai".

(Does BJP has a contract? I am a Hindu. A netter Hindu than all these nautankis of BJP people. We dia a Parikrama of Narmada. How many of the BJP nautankis have done it? Do they have a contract? Swaroopanad Ji is my Guru since 1983.)

Earlier, posters showing Rahul Gandhi as Ram Bhakt, and MP chief minister Kamal Nath as Hanuman Bhakt had sprouted in Bhopal on February 7, a day before the party president's visit to the state for a kisan rally of the Congress.

Congress has earlier played the Hindu card via religious posters when it had depicted Rahul Gandhi as Lord Ram in Patna in Bihar on January 29.

Pictures of the poster showing Congress president Rahul Gandhi's photo morphed to look like Lord Ram came into the light. Furthermore, the poster also had pictures of UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and newly inducted party member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on one side.

The poster also includes a slogan as well, saying "Ve Ram naam japte rahe... tum Ram bankar jio re!", which translates to.. They kept on chanting the name of Ram.. you live long being the Ram"!
