Republic TV on Saturday exposed shocking tapes of phone calls between RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and dreaded criminal Mohammad Shahabudin, who is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. In the recordings, it could be clearly heard that Yadav is taking instructions about police deployment from Shahabuddin. Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD is a part of the ruling alliance in the state of Bihar, where Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister. His son, Tejashwi Yadav is the deputy Chief Minister of the state. But how correct is it for a party in power to be acting according to the demands of a convicted criminal?

There is no reason why Nitish Kumar should not distance himself and his government from RJD. Republic believes that is is unacceptable if Nitish Kumar takes no action against Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Here are 7 reasons why:

  1. It is not acceptable because in a country based on the principles of democracy, we, the people this Republic will not let a criminal puppeteer the government of Bihar and get away with absolute impunity.
  2. It is not acceptable because our country is built on the principles of checks and balances where the power is decided between the judiciary, the legislature and the executive to build a welfare state. So we're not going to accept it when organs of the government are suppresses by power wielding convicts like Shahabuddin!
  3. Our country is governed by the Constitution of India. We will not turn bystander let alone justify or accept the overt extra-constitutional administration that plagues Bihar as played out in these tapes.
  4. Nitish Kumar has asserted that “there is no jungle raj; there is rule of law in Bihar” and has almost made it the slogan of his political career. It is not acceptable if the same Chief Minister who is accountable to every Indian citizen goes into mute silence now that we’ve put proof of his own ally-in-chief almost crumbling to the directions of a Mafia Don in jail.
  5. It is not acceptable if no action is taken because there is no rationale or reasoning after listening to these tapes for Lalu Prasad Yadav to be involved, at any level, in the politics of the State, given his ruthless criminalisation of politics that we’ve put out as evidence this morning!
  6. It is not acceptable because Nitish Kumar was sworn in on the premise of “Mangal Raj” and not “Jungle Raj”. It is not acceptable because Republic has today exposed the nexus between criminals and politicians in Bihar.
  7. Given that the ruling alliance of a state is indirectly getting its instructions on law and order by a murder convict, it is simply not acceptable.

Mr. Nitish Kumar, it is now time to stand by your words, and take appropriate action against Lalu Prasad Yadav.
