74-year old Mangayamma welcomes twins, becomes oldest to give birth

A medical marvel story has come true in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, when 74-year Erramatti Mangayamma gave birth to twin girls, according to ANI. Mangayamma achieved motherhood at such a later age through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) method at Guntur's Ahalya Hospital. Talking to reporters, the hospital's Director - Dr. Umasankar said that Mangayamma had approached the hospital last year for getting a baby through IVF. The doctor elaborated that using her husband's sperm and a donor egg, she conceived in January. While the mother is still in ICU, the hospital has reported to ANI that both baby girls are healthy.

Doctor shares details of 'miracle'

Speaking to reporters after the cesarean operation was successfully concluded, Umasankar said, "This is a medical miracle." The director worked with a team of four doctors to perform the surgery. He has claimed that Mangayamma has become the oldest woman in the world to give birth. Mangayamma too has expressed her happiness saying, "I am very happy. God has answered our prayers."

Mangayamma's journey to motherhood

According to news reports, Mangayamma and her husband Raja Rao was childless after 54 years of marriage. The couple who hailed from Nelapartipadu village in Andhra Pradesh had approached the hospital for IVF. After conducting various tests, doctors found that she was fit to get pregnant. She had conceived in the very first cycle of the procedure. The doctors had then monitored her general health, nutrition, and cardiac health, as shared by Umasankar.

Reports also say that the overjoyed couple wanted to perform 'Seemantham' - a traditional ceremony performed in the eighth month of a woman's pregnancy. But doctors had advised them against it. Three teams of doctors comprising of ten doctors had worked for nine months to keep a close watch on her health, including regular scans. Doctors had revealed that there were no complications and keeping the couple's wishes in mind, the hospital had organised the ceremony in the premises a few hours prior to the delivery.

Oldest woman to give birth

Previously,  70-year-old Daljinder Kaur who gave birth in 2016 was considered to be the oldest woman in the world to give birth to a baby. The Haryana woman had delivered a baby boy in 2016 using the IVF process. 74-year old Mangayamma has surpassed Kaur on Thursday by giving birth to twin girls. Doctors have kept both mother and children under observation for a few days, as per reports.
