India has entered an elite club of nations that are capable of knocking off satellites in space, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday after a DRDO missile tested off the Odisha coast successfully hit a low orbit satellite. Even as the nation celebrated India becoming a space superpower on Wednesday, opposition parties resorted to low politics on the matter by downplaying the massive success that India has achieved.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi termed it as "Theatre", Mamata Banerjee called it "limitless drama" and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav went a step ahead and stated that "China has done this before us". Moreover, Former Defence Minister under the UPA government AK Antony, who served the position from 2006-2014, said that he was not informed about A-SAT operation.

However, Republic TV has accessed UPA government's MoD report documented in April 2013, clearly contradicting former Defence Minister AK Antony denial.

Moreover, the document also mentions that "anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) a concept of ‘watchdog satellites’ to guard other satellites could also be explored".

"With miniaturisation, the future trends should be towards smaller satellites. In fact, a network of satellites capable of working together should be capable of seeing a moving target on the ground or at sea anywhere in the world. With the advent of anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) a concept of ‘watchdog satellites’ to guard other satellites could also be explored".

Furthermore, Republic TV has also accessed a report by US scientist that states 'India was also developing a hit-to-kill ballistic missile defense system which could also serve an ASAT role' while 'China’s first ballistic missile defense test on January 11, 2010, used this same technology'.

"The hit-to-kill intercept technology used by China for its January 2007 satellite destruction was apparently developed as a system that could be used either for ballistic missile defense or ASAT attacks. It is likely that China’s first ballistic missile defense test on January 11, 2010, used this same technology. India is also developing a hit-to-kill ballistic missile defense system which could also serve an ASAT role. Long-standing restraint regarding such systems has been weakened", the report reads.

Earlier in the day, in an explosive interview to Republic TV, Former DRDO chief VK Saraswat revealed that in 2012 and 2013, the UPA  government blocked 'Mission Shakti' even though the DRDO was ready with the necessary steps.

"We had already complete the stimulation process. We wanted to combine the capabilities of our Ballistic missile system and the developed capabilities of AGNI program to get results in the same direction. However, we still had to develop certain technology for which we wanted resources and permission. But no such permission was granted to us during 2012-13 and even 2014. But under the leadership of PM Modi and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, we were able to get all the required permission. The DRDO set the integration, realisation and demonstration",  Mr. Saraswat revealed.
