Additional Director General of Police Directs SSPs To withdraw SPOs From Security Duty

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order, Muneer Ahmad Khan has issued a formal order saying that any Special Police Officer (SPO) deployed as PSO (personal security officer) to any VIP should be withdrawn forthwith.

The order issued reads;

“It has been observed that some SPOs are performing PSO duties with the protected persons which are not in accordance with the security norms as SPOs are not trained to perform PSO duties.”

The order directs all concerned officers not to deploy any SPO on PSO duty (except SPO drivers) and withdraw all such SPOs who have been deployed. In the meantime, a day before the constitution of a special investigation team, police questioned for three days PDP MLA (Wachi constituency of Shopian) Ajaz Mir, from whose official residence at Jawahar Nagar Srinagar a special police officer decamped with seven AK-47 rifles and licensed pistol of the legislators last week

Official sources close to ‘Republic’ said that the police recorded MLA Aijaz Mir’s statement in connection with the incident which occurred on Friday. They said that the MLA was questioned on a wide range of issues as to how long he knows the SPO, Adil Bashir.

Sources further said that the said SPO was appointed on the recommendation of the same MLA and then posted at his official residences as he (the MLA) asked for it. Meanwhile, Official sources close to ‘Republic’ said that the investigation in the weapon loot case from the official residence of Ajaz Mir was going on.

Meanwhile, police constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate how the plan to loot weapons from the official residence of a legislator in Srinagar was executed by an SPO (Adil Sheikh). SIT is headed by a superintendent of police (South Srinagar) and shall have the “liberty” to visit any southern district to “corroborate evidence collected so far” and quiz any suspect.

It is pertinent to mention that, Three days after the incident, Adil Sheikh showed up in a photograph on social networking sites along with Hizbul Mujahideen militants including its top commander Zeenat-ul-Islam. In the meantime, the security was put on high alert after the SPO decamped with the weapons.
