After facing a marathon six-hour-long grilling at the hands of the ED on Wednesday, Robert Vadra will have to appear before the agency again on Thursday morning at 10:30, in connection with a money laundering case relating to alleged possession of illegal foreign assets.
As per sources, Vadra was non-cooperative and failed to give any information when confronted with a mail trail that shows conclusively that properties were being purchased for him via his benami proxies. Furthermore, it has also been claimed that Robert Vadra’s Skylight Hospitality has illegally acquired a villa in Dubai - this aside from his alleged properties in the UK that are under the ED's scanner at the moment.
As far as the route of the transactions go, Republic TV has learnt that Vadra's aide Sanjay Bhandari had registered a company in the British Virgin Islands for Robert Vadra and used this vehicle to purchase illegal properties. Sources added that Sumit Chadha - Sanjay Bhandari's nephew - sent multiple emails marked to Bhandari and Vadra. Robert Vadra replied to the emails marking both Sumit and Sanjay giving clear instructions to purchase the properties.
Earlier Republic TV had broken news that Robert Vadra had denied all charges levied against him in the money laundering case. Furthermore, he also claimed that 'he has no business relations with his alleged close aide, Sanjay Bhandari', saying he knows Sanjay Bhandari only as a 'friend'.
When the ED officers asked Vadra to write down the claims, he refused to do so, as per sources. Moreover, on being questioned about his 8-9 London-based properties, Robert Vadra claimed that he had made all disclosures about his foreign assets and presented I-T documents in his defence.
High drama was witnessed outside the ED office in Delhi on Wednesday, when Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who took charge as the Congress General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (East), came to drop off her husband Robert Vadra to the ED office before his questioning. After seeing off her husband, she proceeded to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) HQ where she promptly took up her responsibilities as the general secretary for UP East.
On being asked about her husband's questioning by the ED, the only statement she gave: 'I stand by my family'.
