Ajay Kumar Bhalla new Home Secretary, replaces Rajiv Gauba

The ACC approved the appointment of Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the new Union Home Secretary, MHA, replacing Rajiv Gauba, who is appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday approved the appointment of IAS Officer Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the new Union Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who is currently working as the Officer on Special Duty, Home Ministry, and will be replacing Rajiv Gauba, who was appointed as the new cabinet secretary on Wednesday. Rajiv Gauba will retire as the Home Secretary, MHA on August 31, following which Bhalla will take over the position. Ajay Kumar Bhalla will have a fixed two-year tenure as the union home secretary which will last till August 2021.

Who is Ajay Kumar Bhalla?

A 1984-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer, Ajay Kumar Bhalla served as the Union power secretary, before he was appointed as an officer on special duty, Home Ministry by the ACC on July 24. He had also served as the director General of Foreign Trade before joining the Ministry of Power. He had also held the position of Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce and  Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal. 

 Earlier in July, the government had also appointed Atanu Chakraborty, a 1985 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, as the new Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs. He had succeeded S C Garg, who was appointed as the new Power Secretary.

Who is Rajiv Gauba?

Current Home Secretary to the Home Ministry, Rajiv Gauba is going to hold one of the most powerful position in the civil service of the country - cabinet secretary. An IAS officer of the 1982 Jharkhand batch, he is going to be joining the Cabinet Secretariat as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD), after which he will take over at the Cabinet Secretary replacing the incumbent P K Sinha. Rajiv Gauba is largely credited with being the face behind the labour laws in Jharkhand.
