Two days ahead of the date 35th anniversary of fateful Operation Blue Star, National Spokesperson of Akali Dal Manjinder S Sirsa, on Monday, has written a letter asking PM Modi to appoint a Supreme Court judge to look into the circumstances created by the then-Indira Gandhi-led government against Sikhs to execute Operation Blue Star. He has also demanded an apology from the Indian government for executing Operation Blue Star.
In the two-page letter, he writes that the attack on Sikhs on the martyrdom day of Guru Arjun Dev Ji orchestrated by Indira Gandhi in1984 had destroyed the faith of Sikhs in her government and the Congress Party forever.
He further claims in the letter, that recent reports emerging from UK have suggested that the the-Prime Minister had sought help of the then UK-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who had sided in planning the attack by sending a member of the UK Special Air Services to India in planning the attack.
Demanding the Centre to appoint a sitting judge of the Apex court to inquire the circumstances that were created by the then- Indira Gandhi Government against Sikhs to execute Operation Blue Star, he writes that in the past 35 years. no one was punished by the successive Congress governments and only when the NDA assumed power were guilty persons like Sajjan Kumar punished.
Here is his entire letter:
The 1984 Operation Blue Star was the biggest internal security mission ever undertaken by the Indian Army. The Operation was Indira Gandhi's solution to the law and order situation in Punjab prevalent at that time due to the rise of Khalistan movement in India. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, ordered the military operation to remove Sikh militants who were accumulating weapons in the Harmandir Sahib Complex (Golden Temple) under Operation Blue Star which was carried out between June 1 and June 8, 1984, in Amritsar.
During Operation Blue Star, Khalistan supporters took over the Akal Takht complex in Amritsar's Golden Temple. The operation was specifically aimed to eliminate Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from the Golden Temple complex and regain control over Harmandir Sahib.
The casualties as per the official reports were 83 Indian Army jawans and 492 civilians throughout the whole Operation.
