Aligarh: Girl held for throwing acid on man after refusing marriage

A girl allegedly threw acid on a 20-year-old boy in the Jeevangarh area in Aligarh on Thursday after he refused to marry her, police said. She was arrested.

A 19-year-old girl allegedly threw acid on a boy in the Jeevangarh area in Aligarh on Thursday, October 24, after he refused to marry her, police said. Speaking to media, Anil Simaniya CO, Civil Lines said, "The boy's name is Faizad. He was allegedly in a relationship with the accused girl for the last six months. However, it was reported, that since last month, he had been ignoring the girl and that is why she attacked him with acid". A police official informed, "We have registered an FIR under section 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) and arrested the accused girl."

Dr Khan Zone from Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Joint Hospital said, "A 20-year-old boy was admitted here after receiving injury from acid. His eyes were affected and a team of doctors attended to him". Rukhsana, the mother of the victim claims that the girl was calling up her son but he refused to take her calls. On the day of the incident, she had called him in the morning. She added, "My younger son told me that she was probably having an affair with my son. She was asking him to marry her, he did not agree to it, after which this incident happened". On the other hand, the accused girl alleged that the boy was threatening to make her intimate pictures with him in his possession viral on social media if she did not marry him.

NCRB report on acid attacks in 2017

According to the recently released National Crime Records Bureau report, Uttar Pradesh tops the list with acid attack cases – 56, followed by West Bengal with 54 cases. National capital Delhi registered 14 cases while Kerala and Odisha reported the fourth-highest number of acid attacks with 13 cases each. The report, however, presents the data of 2017.

SRK's initiative

On Friday, October 25, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan visited his Meer foundation in Mumbai to meet and interact with acid attack survivors. He noted that 120 women were undergoing surgery, and thanked the doctors for their help in this ‘noble cause’.
