Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the NRC- Jagaran Abhiyan at the Netaji Indoor Grounds in Kolkata on October 1. In his address, Shah stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled Syama Prasad Mukherjee's dream of abrogating Article 370 in Kashmir. He also advocated the implementation of NRC in Bengal and said all the refugees will be given citizenship under the NRC. The Union Minister also said he would like to remind West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee that Syama Prasad Mukherjee prevented Bengal from falling into Pakistan’s hand.

1. Shah remembered Syama Prasad Mukherjee and said that PM Modi fulfilled Mukherjee’s 73-year long dream:

“73 years later, the state of Bengal gave Modiji 18 seats and right after coming back to power, PM Modi abrogated Article 370 in an instant. For 73 years we said the land where Mukherjee martyred, that land of Kashmir is ours. Today, Modiji has given life to that slogan and made Kashmir an integral part of India.”

2. On being called an ‘outsider’ in Bengal, Shah said: 

“When this entire state of Bengal was about to fall into Pakistan’s share, it was our leader Syama Prasad Mukherjee who protested and helped us form the state of West Bengal. This is our (BJP) relationship with West Bengal.”

3. The Home Minister also clarified misconceptions regarding the NRC:

“People in Bengal are being misled about NRC and I have come here to clarify our strategy on the NRC. I have come here to tell the truth. Mamata Banerjee has been saying that if NRC is implemented then Hindu refugees will have to leave the country. There is no greater lie than this.” 

4. He also assured that no refugee will be forced out of the country:

“I have come here to assure the people of Bengal that all refugees, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs or Jains, the Indian government will force no refugee out of the country.”

5. Shah also spoke about the benefits of implementing the Citizenship Amendment Bill:

“After the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, all the refugees will have the same right on India as much as I have right now. The BJP promises that every refugee will have the right to become the Prime Minister of the country. We will also give voting rights to each refugee and make them citizens of India.”

6. Shah also countered Mamata Banerjee on being against implementation of NRC in Bengal:

“We will not let any infiltrator strive in India. We will remove all of them.”
