Another appalling incident of medical apathy has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district where a pregnant woman was reportedly denied treatment at the district hospital. The woman ultimately had to deliver her child at the gate of the hospital. The video, however, highlights and raises an array of questions on the crumbling health facilities in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
It remains to be seen what Unnao district hospital officials have to say about the shocking incident.
The latest case of medical apathy comes merely a few days after at least 40 people test positive for HIV in the district. A quack who was treating people in the vicinity had allegedly used an infected needle to treat all the victims. It is also being suspected that numerous truck drivers dislodge themselves in Unnao which is a transit point and might be acting as the HIV carriers.
On Tuesday, area councillor Sunil Bangarmau said if proper tests are done, at least 500 cases of HIV would come up.
"40 positive cases have been found. If proper tests are done, at least 500 cases would come up. It is being told that the people here used to go to a quack for treatment of diseases. He used a single syringe on all of them," said Bangarmau.
Health camps have been setup by the local health authorities to curtail the spread of HIV. Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh had also assured an investigation in the connection.
