Arbaaz Khan involved in a global cricket betting scam?: 10 things we know so far

Earlier today, Bollywood actor and producer Arbaaz Khan was summoned by the Thane police in Mumbai regarding his links with alleged top bookie Sonu Jalan. Jalan, who has been held as the kingpin of this global scandal is said to be one of the “biggest bookies” in cricket globally, as per the Investigating Officer in the case.

Here is a 10-point guide as to what we know so far:

  1. The Investigating Officer, Pradeep Sharma has put on record that in the IPL betting case a connection between Arbaaz Khan and Sonu Jalan has been found. The purpose of the summon to the Bollywood actor was to “verify some information” before making it public. “ Due to some mobile numbers , we have summoned him,” Sharma said.
     
  2. Speaking about Khan’s role, Sharma also specifically said that the police are presently working to verify whether Arbaz khan indulged in any match fixing or not.
     
  3. As per the Summon Copy, Arbaaz is to appear at the Khandni Police station in Thane, Mumbai, on Saturday at 11 am.
     
  4. The Investigating Officer also put on record that the latest betting scandal pertains to a worldwide network and has an established connection with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company. One source claimed that “Sonu Jalan’s  Malad's betting racket is directly controlled by Chhota Shakeel's Pakistan-based gang of punters”.
     
  5. Considering the fact that sources claim that Sonu Jalan conducted a sting operations with multiple celebrities who were betting in the IPL, there is a likelihood of names beyond Arbaaz Khan coming out in the case. One source claimed, “ With this stings he used to threatened those celebs who refused to return the money which they lost in betting”.
     
  6. Sources allege that Arbaaz Khan was in touch with bookie Sonu and lost approximately Rs. 2.83 crores as per initial estimates. Sources also allege that the Bollywood star would use Sonu to place his alleged bets.
     
  7. While an initial estimate suggests that the scandal could involve 3,500 punters and more than Rs. 1000 crore turnover, the exact estimate on the money involved in the IPL betting scandal is yet to be ascertained.
     
  8. Sources say that London was the “main centre” of the latest betting scandal and is said to include punters in Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. A London-based website Betntake.com was allegedly used by Jalan.
     
  9. As per sources, a diary which was obtained from Sonu’s house during the investigation revealed 50 numbers of his foreign connections involved in the scandal. The diary allegedly also included names of other bookies written in code words.
     
  10. Meanwhile, while ICC President Shashank Manohar has said that he did not know about it and therefore did not want to comment, BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit’s Ajit Singh told Republic TV that the cricket body is “monitoring the issue”. A top BCCI official also told Republic TV, on the condition of anonymity, that “There are agencies dealing with it. It has nothing to do with IPL organisers or BCCI. If someone from outside choses to bet on IPL how do we become responsible or need to give an explanation?".
