Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Wednesday and announced that India has entered its name as an the elite space power with the successful targeting of a live satellite on a low earth orbit (LEO) using an anti-satellite weapon (A-SAT). The operation was named 'Mission Shakti' which achieved successfully achieved its difficult target within three minutes of its launch. This system was developed by DRDO - the research wing of Indian Defence services.

Here's how this mission is a game-changer for India:

  • With the mission, India has become the 4th nation in the world after US, Russia and China to have a satellite weapon that can take down enemy satellites.
  • India registered itself as a space power.
  • A-SAT missile will give new strength to India's space program. India has successfully tested the Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Missile.
  • India now has the capability to target and destroy space satellites in orbit. 
  • The mission shows the remarkable dexterity of India’s outstanding scientists. 

A satellite in the LEO (Low earth orbit with an altitude up to 2,000 km) can monitor all the activities on the ground and water surfaces. An anti-satellite missile can target an LEO satellite.

PM Modi took to Twitter to inform the nation about the successful operation of the 'Mission Shakti':

During the announcement, he also said that Mission Shakti was not aimed at any country and is only a measure to ensure security. PM Modi further congratulated all DRDO scientists and all others who helped India achieve this major feat.
