As Lok Sabha Elects New Speaker, PM Modi Enumerates Om Birla's 5 Prominent Contributions To The Social Services

Following the appointment of the new Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, PM Modi heaped praises for the BJP MP from Kota parliamentary constitution, enlisting his accomplishments and indulgence in social services. 

Birla was elected unanimously by the Parliament, including the Congress party after he was nominated by PM Modi himself. As the Speaker, succeeding MP Sumitra Mahajan took charge, PM Modi elaborated on Birla's political career that was spent in working for the society

He said, "Usually in the political life we have an image that we only do politics for 24 hours, argue and are engrossed in who wins who loses however apart from that there is a truth that does not come to light. At present, the country has witnessed that in political life, there is more acceptance in society if the proportion of social service if higher. The time of hardcore politics is slowly disappearing."

"Om Birla is one person whose career has been spent in social service. In every aspect of life, if he saw any difficulty, he became among the first people to come forward," he added.

Gujarat Earthquake 

PM Modi shared how Birla spent a period of time in Gujarat's Kutch to serve the people affected by the natural calamity back in 2001. 

He said, " I remember, when there was earthquake in Gujarat, he lived in Kutch for a long period of time, he brought the youths of his area along. During which, he did not use the arrangements of the place but utlised whatever was available and served the society with whatever was available for a long time." 

Kedarnath floods

Similar to Gujarat, PM Modi elaborated on how he became one of the first people to reach Kedarnath during the flash floods in the holy city. 

He said, "When the incident of Kedarnath occurred, he was seen again in Uttrakhand. Even there along with his troop he got occupied in the social work." 

Paridhan Yojna in Kota

PM Modi added how his social services were panned across his own constituency as well wherein he personally went along with the public to distribute 

He said, "Even in Kota, if somebody had no blankets during winters, then he would get out in the lanes of Kota at night, along with public participation he would gather blankets and distribute it to people." 

"For those who don't have clothes, for them, Paridhan Yojna was made, in the Paridhan movement along with people," he added.

Prasadam Yojana Kota

He shared how another Yojana was introduced in the Rajasthan constituency to assure that no person goes to bed hungry.

He said, "He had also fasted that no one should sleep hungry in Kota. He runs a Prasadam Yojna in Kota, under which, along with public participation, finding people who are hungry and feeding them became a regular work for him." 

Social services in Kota

PM Modi added how Birla distributed shoes in summers, set up blood donation camps, and that his political life was based on 'social service' and that appointment of such a Speaker would bring in the same discipline in the Parliament and indirectly provide the country with the same.  

He said, "Bound by the social Constitution he would distribute shoes in summers, install blood donation camps or provide services in hospital along with the people. 

"In a way, his political life was based on social service than a mass movement. Such a person on the post of Speaker will also discipline us and encourage us and through that, this Parliament can provide this country will the best," he added.
