While volunteering at Assam's famed tea gardens, Dr Dutta was assaulted by the relatives of a tea garden worker who died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, in Jorhat district on Saturday. Dutta was one person against around 100 people in the mob that assaulted him. He tragically succumbed to his injuries and breathed his last at Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH).

Doctors staged protests for him

On Tuesday, doctors across government and private hospitals in Assam took to the streets to stage a protest for the 76-year-old senior doctor. They observed a 24-hour withdrawal of Non-emergency services that started from 6 am on Tuesday. They would only respond to Emergency and Out Patient Department (OPD) calls.

Additionally, doctors, pharmacists, and para-medical personnel have also taken out a dharna in front of the deputy commissioner's office. They've demanded justice for Dutta.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a statement from its headquarters in New Delhi.

The IMA said that it strongly condemns the killing of Dutta and has demanded immediate arrest and prosecution of the culprits. It also asked for appropriate compensation for the family.

The statement, along the lines of concern of the medical community, said that the medical professionals of the nation are aghast at the level of violence prevailing in the community against doctors. In June this year, the entire medical profession had risen as one across the nation seeking justice and security.

While speaking to Republic TV, a senior doctor expressed his grief by saying that it is unfortunate that doctors have now come to roads. He also said that they want justice. He stated that doctors are not God, they are human beings and would like to live like that. He also said that this might be a good chance for Assam to set an example before the entire nation. He requested that the government initiate a fast track trial so that the nation can see that culprits of such an inhumane and barbaric nature have been given the strictest punishments.

According to sources, about 25 people have been arrested while others are yet to be found.
