BJP party on Sunday replaced plastic water bottles with glass jars during a meeting with Prime Minister Modi and other senior leaders at the party headquarters. This was done keeping in mind PM Modi's clarion call to ban the use of single-use plastic in the country. During the meeting, the Prime Minister was accompanied by BJP chief Amit Shah and working president JP Nadda, along with other party functionaries. At the time of the meeting, all the leaders were served glass jars instead of water bottles which were seen kept on their table.

After returning from his 7-day US trip, PM Modi on Sunday held a Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting of the BJP at the party headquarters in New Delhi. During the meeting, candidates for the upcoming state elections in Maharashtra and Haryana were finalised. Following the party meeting, BJP announced the candidates for by-polls for the state Legislative Assembly in various constituencies. The saffron party released the name of 36 candidates contesting for the seats, as approved by BJP working president JP Nadda.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana are going to take place on October 21 in a single phase, with the counting to take place on October 24.

Ban on single-use plastic

Earlier on Sunday, PM Modi once again made a clarion call to get rid of single-use plastic to mark the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. He said that 130 crore Indians have resolved to get rid of single-use plastic in the country. He was talking about the issue in his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'. PM Modi also raised the need to take steps to combat environmental challenges, during his speech at the 74th session of the UNGA in New York, which were appreciated by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
